Our Journey to Closing the Gap Day

Our journey to becoming the steward of this beloved community event began with our strong partnership alignment with Sonder, the previous coordinator and leader of Closing the Gap Day in Adelaide for more than a decade.

The two organisations began working in close collaboration in recent years that set out a strong foundation of shared commitments and objectives associated with the National Close the Gap Initiatives.

As Sonder passes on the stewardship of this invaluable event to the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector, Nunkuwarrin Yunti is immensely proud to take the lead from 2026, continuing the dedication to Aboriginal health, wellbeing, and self-determination for the community we serve here on Kaurna Yerta and South Australia.

Acknowledging Sonder’s Legacy

Closing the Gap Day has been delivered annually in Adelaide since 2015, with Sonder coordinating and leading the event for more than a decade in recognition of National Close the Gap Day.

Over this time, the event has grown into a significant community celebration, bringing together hundreds of organisations to connect Aboriginal people and families with services, while celebrating culture through art, dance and music.

In 2023 and 2024, Sonder worked in partnership with Nunkuwarrin Yunti to deliver the event. In 2026, Nunkuwarrin Yunti proudly leads the delivery of Closing the Gap Day, building on this strong foundation and continuing the shared commitment to Aboriginal health, wellbeing and self-determination. Sonder has always considered itself as the steward of this event and we’re pleased to pass on the stewardship of this invaluable community event to the Aboriginal Community Controlled sector.
