Event Host

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap is to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and governments to work together to overcome the inequality experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and achieve life outcomes equal to all Australians. It is built around 4 Priority Reforms and 17 Targets, transforming the way governments work with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to improve outcomes. As the event steward, Nunkuwarrin Yunti will commit to building strong focuses on strengthening cultural connections and raising awareness around health and social and emotional wellbeing, key efforts in addressing the inequities faced by our communities as outlined and reported in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. (Closing the Gap; Coalitions of Peaks)

Nunkuwarrin Yunti of South Australia was established in the 1960s by the late Gladys Elphick MBE, founder of the Council of Aboriginal Women of South Australia. Together with a group of trailblazing women and men, she helped create one of the first Aboriginal organisations in the country.

Formally incorporated in 1971, Nunkuwarrin Yunti has grown and adapted over time, evolving from the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, the Aboriginal Community Centre of South Australia, and the Aboriginal Community Recreation and Health Services Centre of South Australia. Our first health program began through community generosity – supported by donations, government funding, and the commitment of an empathetic and dedicated doctor.

Today, Nunkuwarrin Yunti delivers a wide range of health and wellbeing services across four sites on Kaurna Yerta:

  • Wakefield Street, at the heart of the Adelaide CBD providing 715 Health Screening Checks alongside GP and social services
  • Waterloo Corner Road, our newest location providing health services for local community in the northern suburbs
  • Salisbury, home to our Women, Children and Family Health programs
  • Marion, where our Social and Emotional Wellbeing team is based

Rooted in community and culture, we continue to honour our history while striving to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people across South Australia.
